Islam has a fine and long history in the Ural Federal District. Once, the Khanate of Sibir was situated here, while the sounds of the adhan were heard along the Siberian rivers as early as in the 13th century. During the Soviet era, especially during the USSR's war against Nazi Germany, industrial centres were set up in the region, with a lot of Muslims working in there.

A lot of old mosques have been restored in the region recently, with new ones also being built, displaying the material culture of the peoples in the Urals.

Wood and stone

For the centuries the mosques were built mainly in wood. But those mosques had a short life due to the sever climate conditions. Now the mosques are built in stone, while still repeating the authenticity of the old ones

In the Soviet era, the believers often gathered together at home to carry out Islamic ceremonies. Even now, despite the availability of new mosques, people still call the houses used as the prayer halls to be the mosques.
